For someone who is looking to start a career in accounting, whether in public practice or industry, there is no better training ground than working at a CPA firm. However in today’s competitive environment, it is not easy to find a job with a firm, big or small.
One of the biggest complaints from the big 4s or mid-size firms is that new recruits are too inexperienced. It would take quite a bit of training before the students can be fairly productive. For the small CPA firms, they simply loathe to take on any students because of the steep training curve. Many of the small CPA owners would rather put up with the long hours themselves required during busy tax season than to hire new recruits as they simply don’t have the resources or time to train any new hires.
Looking for a Head Start?
Diana Mau, CPA, CA is currently offering an accounting training course that she designed for anyone wanting to pursue a career in accounting.
The course consists of two classes per week for six weeks starting in January 2016. Each class is 2.5 hours in duration.
The course materials include a case study featuring a full set of accounting records that model a real life retail business. Through the case study, students will learn and accomplish the following:
- A deep understanding of debits/credits and be able to journalize complicated transactions
- Full cycle accounting/bookkeeping
- Preparation of financial statements
- Preparation of payroll remittance and T4 slips
- Preparation of PST and GST returns
Students will have three practices of the case study using the most widely used software employed by CPA firms; Caseware, Sage (Simply Accounting) and Excel.
In addition to the case study, students will be provided with tax slips to prepare personal income tax returns using tax software.
Classes are small. There will be a maximum of 9 students per class. Each student will be provided with a laptop installed with teaching software as well as one-on-one attention from the instructor. Students can also review pre-recorded lectures.
$900 + GST – this includes tuition, all study material and laptop usage.
Diana Mau guarantees that each student will be placed with a CPA firm for non-compensated practicum for a minimum of three weeks. Thereafter, any continuation of work will be compensated.
